One of my favorites is Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson. There is so much to think about in this slim book - racial issues, disabilities, faith. Most amazing is how well Woodson pulls us into the world of a sixth grade girl wrestling to make sense of these issues in her world. The writing is so descriptive and not a word is wasted. The questions this book raises will stay with me a long time; I'm even recommending it to my adult friends.
I also enjoyed The Invention of Hugo Cabret, How to Steal a Dog, and Elijah of Buxton.
