My favorite picture book of the year is The Magic Rabbit by Annette LeBlanc Cates. Drawn in black & white, with a sprinkling of tiny gold stars, it's the story of a street magician and has best friend and partner - his bunny. The bunny is lost during a performance mishap and must find his way back to the magician. Absolutely charming!

I also like Toy Boat and Not a Box. All have minimal words and let the pictures carry the story.

I love That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell, but unfortunately it is nor eligible for the Caldecott since the author lives in England. And Knuffle Bunny Too (most of my faves this year seem to involve rabbits).

And The Arrival by Shaun Tan is astounding, but he's Australian. Maybe the Printz Award? The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is also excellent.
