I definitely agree that The Wednesday Wars is my favorite right now for the Newbery. I believe that the excellent characterization, the clear sense of place and time, and Schmidt's quality of writing make this a candidate. And I love the interweaving of Shakespeare so that students will understand his relevance, no matter when or where.
In the category of just "my favorites," I am very fond of Talented Clementine, and the Main Street series. They are both simply delightful. When my 9-year-old and I listened to the recording of The Talented Clementine we laughed uproariously, and my daughter said, "How do the readers keep from laughing when they're reading?" Each of the Main Street books is full of warmth and kindness, but not in the saccharine way. I felt as we finished the first three in the series that we knew each of these characters personally, and care deeply about their lives.
I have a huge stack at home based on everyone's recommendations, so I look forward to immersing myself in good reading for the next month!
