Sorry to burst in here, but I have been reading the actual study and I find it far, far, less than convincing. In fact on the very first page Dan Gioia admits he has not proven any cause and effect, just shown a "correlation" between a supposed decline in reading and various social ills -- so the actual study backs away from its own claims. When I have had a chance to read it carefully and to talk with experts, I will publish a detailed response. But, friends, saying the sky is falling does not mean it is.
