[CCBC-Net] The Golden Compass Movie

But what if 8 year olds DO notice the bad guys are religious? Why are so many of us afraid of that? It's one reality of religion in our culture and histories. While religion can do social good, it has also been used to commit or justify atrocities and oppression. Would it be the end of the world if children got Pullman's point of view as one voice on religion? I think it helps prepare kids to understand issues such as how Christianity was used to both support and oppose slavery, the Inquisition, entire huge swaths of the Kings and Popes European history they'll encounter, the role of Catholic missionaries in the Spanish occupation in Central and South America, and on and on.

Know that I write this a feminist but fairly religiously observant Jew. Why do so many of us feel pushed to apologize for Pullman's perspective instead of championing children's right to learn about their world in diverse and challenging ways?

I just had a book fair at my school, and there are a couple of new books out on the movie of The Golden Compass. These are written from the movie and third graders could easily handle them. The thing about this movie and the Harry Potter movies is that younger children might enjoy the movies but not be able to read the books independently until they are much older. Hopefully, they'll have some vague remembrance that it was an interesting movie and that will get them to read the book when they are ready for it. As far as the religious stuff in Golden Compass, I have no doubt that it will all go right over kid's heads, as long as their parents don't make a big deal out of it! After all, it's obviously a FANTASY! Bears are warriors and talk...what eight-year-old is going to notice that the bad guys seem to be honchos in a religious group?
