I just had a book fair at my school, and there are a couple of new books out on the movie of The Golden Compass. These are written from the movie and third graders could easily handle them. The thing about this movie and the Harry Potter movies is that younger children might enjoy the movies but not be able to read the books independently until they are much older. Hopefully, they'll have some vague remembrance that it was an interesting movie and that will get them to read the book when they are ready for it. As far as the religious stuff in Golden Compass, I have no doubt that it will all go right over kid's heads, as long as their parents don't make a big deal out of it! After all, it's obviously a FANTASY! Bears are warriors and talk...what eight-year-old is going to notice that the bad guys seem to be honchos in a religious group?
