Books and movies are such different species.
A novel is the vision of one person, while a film is the vision of many. If a writer decides to sell the film rights to a book, he or she can take heart that the book will not be changed: the book will remain in its original state in bookstores and libraries all over the country. Writers who are protective of their novels don't have to sell the film rights, of course, but a feature film can bring an author many, many new readers; readers who might not otherwise discover the book.
