Oh, great topic...here's a few that I have enjoyed recently:
Meet the Robinsons (A Day with Wilbur Robinson) Carrie's War Millions Because of Winn Dixie Get a Clue (Westing Game) Lyddie How to Eat Fried Worms (hits a 10 on the gross-out meter) Freaky Friday The Witches
The Secret Garden The Little Princess Black Beauty
I thought the last three were beautifully filmed in terms of sets, costumes and sound tracks.
I think that whenever a director and screenwriter adapt a movie to the screen, there will always be room for disagreement. Adaptations are a creative endeavor and may or, more typically, may not be faithful. Personally, it doesn't bother me when the director isn't faithful to the original because there are times his/her change is an improvement over the original. I really liked the way the screenwriter changed Freaky Friday (the second version) to revolve around the fortune cookie in the Chinese restaurant. And the casting was fabulous.
I realize this is terrible heresy but when I'm in the movie theater eating popcorn and immersed in a film, I just try to enjoy the ride. And I look at the total package: sets, costumes, casting, music, etc. Before I became a librarian, I worked as a costumer for several large West Coast theaters--S.F. Opera, ACT, Oregon Shakespeare Festival--so I know how much work goes into mounting a stage production, let alone a film production.

Let's start our discussion for the first part of November: Books on Film.
We first discussed this topic in July of 2003. With the film adaptation of Susan Cooper's /The Dark Is Rising /now out (not to mention additional Harry Potter movies and other movie adaptations in the past four years), we thought'd we'd take another look and talk about some of the newer releases that have delighted-or infuriated-lovers of the books
on which they are based.
Perhaps there also have been some television adaptations that captured your attention.
What are your thoughts on some of the more recent "translations" of books into these media?
