Speaking of the 'After School Specials', remember "Wonderworks" on PBS? They are the ones that originally ran Kevin Sullivan's adaptation of 'Anne of Green Gables' and speaking of that, 'Girl From the Limberlost' (another good book to film version) was also a Wonderworks showing.
PBS stopped running these when they decided that their audience did not include YA's.

I agree that fewer students are actually READING the books made into movies that they like. However, when a movie is dreadful, like The BFG, Eragon and Roll of Thunder it can encourage students to read the real thing! Personally, I wish they'd bring back the "After school specials" ABC ran in the 1980's. They adapted a great version of Byars' Pinballs that I still remember!
