[CCBC-Net] Books on Film

I think you're on the money with Eragon... terrible, terrible adaptation. In terms of script approval/input, the most baffling case to me is Bridge to Terebithia. Katherine Paterson's son adapted (or shared a writing credit? maybe I should get my facts straight...) the screenplay, and supposedly had Mom's blessings. How? What were all those trolls and stuff? Maybe they were necessary for the movie, but as a lover of the book they really threw me off. Especially the big troll with the face of the bullying girl... yech. I found it incredibly distasteful. I think that speaks somewhat to what someone else said (don't remember who) - it seems as though kids' movies are "dumbed" down, which is pretty insulting. I almost felt like I was being forcefed all that stuff. Disappointing.

One of the worst adaptations I have seen recently is Eragon from the same titled book by Christopher Paolini. Not only were there many deviations from the original story, but the movie, as hailed by critics, was terrible--there are problems with acting and scripting as well as a rushed feel with the plot. Roger Ebert went as far as to say: "It's one of the absolute worst films made this decade...it's like a cross between Harry Potter and Gigli." In other words, I did not particularly enjoy this film.On another note, do you find that most recent media adaptations of print material allow input and script approval from the original author and how does this, in your opinion, affect the end results of the film/television program/etc.?
