Adaptations I liked:
Based on comics or graphic novels:
*Spider-man trilogy
*X-men trilogy (last one kind of not)
*Batman Begins actually more faithful to the modern comic than any of the previous movies.
*Hellboy -- seriously. YA in focus, but it was very good, some critics said it was the best comic-to-movie version of any adaptation. My pre-teen son loved it.
*Mystery Men. Ok, I didn't really care for it, but again, my pre-teen son loved it.
Books:
*Harry Potter series -- They keep getting better, even as they keep having to trim the story down for the film. I wish they'd release 'extended version DVDs'.
*Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe (much better than the BBC TV specials) -- extended version is really good.
*Because of Winn Dixie (some changes, but kept the overall feel)
*Holes (same comment, changed some key parts, but overall good adaptation)
*Little Women (the most recent adaptation -- Robin Swicord adapted the book to the screen and did an awesome job)
*Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea (aka Anne of Green Gables the sequel) -- with Megan Follows and Coleen Dewhurst. Faithful to the books, breathtaking scenery, one of the best adaptations I have ever encountered!
*Muppet Treasure Island and
*Muppet Christmas Carol both better than most fully 'live action' versions!
*Sisterhood of the traveling Pants. I didn't read the books, but my daughter assures me the movie was good. YA material, however.
*Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy -- YA in some parts, but Douglas Adams apparently approved the script before his death. Again, my pre-teen son loved it, he watched it so much his sister threatened to hide it from him forever!
Adaptations I have NOT liked:
*Kiera Knightly's "Pride and Prejuidce". gets a bit "HUH?" from me.
*Sci-Fi's "Earthsea". Ursula K. LeGuin was totally cut out of the process after being 'guaranteed' full script approval, as a result it was not even a good Fantasy adventure.
*Anne of Green Gables the continuing story -- set during WWI, it's a completly different story from any of the books, and it just doesn't work.
There are others that I just turned off part-way through, but they made such a lasting impression I can't think of them right now! LOL
Haven't seen but have been warned about:
*Superman Returns. I actually refuse to see this based on the changes from the 'canon' of the story. Way too many liberties
*The Dark is rising -- should have been a series, everyone I know who has seen it has said they cut the heart out of it.
*Dark Compass -- ditto from reviewers.

Let's start our discussion for the first part of November: Books on Film.
We first discussed this topic in July of 2003. With the film adaptation of Susan Cooper?s /The Dark Is Rising /now out (not to mention additional Harry Potter movies and other movie adaptations in the past four years), we thought'd we'd take another look and talk about some of the newer releases that have delighted?or infuriated?lovers of the books on which they are based.
Perhaps there also have been some television adaptations that captured your attention.
What are your thoughts on some of the more recent "translations" of books into these media?
