Speaking of books and movies...

Philip Pullman's mystery, The Ruby in the Smoke (a Masterpiece Theater presentation), is scheduled to be on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT Channel 28) at 3:00 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, Nov. 10.

(From the WPT Program Schedule website) Adapted from Philip Pullman's first novel about Sally Lockhart, a feisty, orphaned Victorian teen (Billie Piper), "The Ruby in the Smoke" finds her ferreting out information about her father's death; discovering cursed jewels.

I wasn't aware there was a movie version of this book until recently when I saw the video/DVD available for purchase in a catalog I received for the holidays. (Acorn?) Having previously read and enjoying the book, I thought I'd purchase the movie. Then I discovered it would be aired on our local Public Television station. I still recommend it regularly as a good mystery for my middle school students. I'm looking forward watching it on Saturday and will try to post again, with a more direct answer to the question of the quality of the movie vs. book.

A web search on the title revealed that the movie was released in the UK in December of 2006 and is scheduled for release in the US in February.

Let's start our discussion for the first part of November: Books on Film.

We first discussed this topic in July of 2003. With the film adaptation of Susan Cooper's /The Dark Is Rising /now out (not to mention additional Harry Potter movies and other movie adaptations in the past four years), we thought'd we'd take another look and talk about some of the newer releases that have delighted-or infuriated-lovers of the books

on which they are based.

Perhaps there also have been some television adaptations that captured your attention.

What are your thoughts on some of the more recent "translations" of books into these media?

Megan
