So what do you have them do in the library?
I ask because I volunteer in the 8th grade at my daughter's school and our 8th graders (for last few years at least) seem to value their library time.
But library time for them is a time to work on papers, get research assistance, use the 'net, do small group conferencing, etc. In other words, library isn't its own class -- it is a freer space in which to work on assignments for other subjects.
If library can't be structured around work they're doing for other subjects, what about a series of scavenger hunt type research assignments designed to get them to work with a variety of different sources, evaluate evidence, explore new media/genres, etc.
