Famous authors to speak in Fresno
The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature at California State University, Fresno, will host some several well-known authors on Saturday, October 6, at a conference co-sponsored by the North Central California Chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. Called "Painted Words and Spoken Pictures," the conference is planned for authors, illustrators, teachers, librarians, collectors, and fans of children's and young adult literature fans. It will be held at the Residence Dining Hall on the Fresno State campus. The authors' books will be available for sale and autographing. Speakers will include:
* Aliki, the award-winning author or illustrator of 200 children's books including How a Book is Made, William Shakespeare and the Globe, My Five Senses, and The Play's the Thing. Aliki, who lives in London, is known internationally for her picture books. Website www.harpercollinschildrens.com.
* Karen Cushman, the Newbery-winning author of The Midwife's Apprentice (the Newbery medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children for that year), Catherine, Called Birdy, The Ballad of Lucy Whipple, Matilda Bone, Rodzina, and The Loud Silence of Francine Green, which reflects her own adolescence in Los Angeles. * Steve Mooser is the author of more than 50 books for children including Elvis is Back and He's in the Sixth Grade! and The All-Star Meatball series featuring detective Goofball Malone. Steve, who grew up in Fresno, is the president and co-founder of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, an international organization with 24,000 members. Website www.scbwi.org.
* Yuyi Morales is a rising star in the field of children's literature. A radio personality in her native Mexico before moving to the Bay Area, she learned English by watching Sesame Street with her son. She is the illustrator of Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez, Sand Sister, and Los Gatos Black on Halloween, and the author/illustrator of Little Night and Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book, winner of the Pura Belpr? Medal for illustration (this Medal is given biennially by the American Library Association to Latino/Latina author and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience). * Carolyn Yoder, author of George Washington: The Writer and the forthcoming John Adams: The Writer and editor of Calkins Creek, the United States history imprint of Boyds Mill Press. Website www.boydsmillspress.com.
