Hi All,
Greetings from your first Australian correspondent.
I'm delighted that the collective gaze is on Australia's writers for the next couple of weeks. I'm impressed by the number of authors whose names are coming up. There is a great sense of diversity in the stories Australian writers tell and the ways they tell them.
But can I ask a question? What other images of Australia do you see in your media, either in film, television, magazines, music, sports and newspapers. Are these images confirmed or challenged by our literature?
Also, are there books in which the 'Australianness' is secondary? To what extent are we an 'exotic' in United States culture?
I guess what I am asking is this: where do you see these books fitting in the American imagination, in creating an image of Australia ?
Actually, that was a bunch of questions. We can be nosy, like wombats, we Australians.
