Thank you for sharing your perspectives on Newbery books over the past couple of weeks.
Today we will begin our discussion for the second part of September: Down Under . . . Again.
In July of 2002 on CCBC-Net, we talked about the remarkable works of literature for children and teens from Australian authors and artists being published here in the United States. We continue to see extraordinary books?especially young adult titles?coming out of Australia, including a number of writers who are newcomers to publishing here.
We want to spend the remainder of September talking about new Australian authors, artists, and individual titles that have become part of the U.S. publishing scene for children and teens in the past five years.
When I look through recent editions of CCBC Choices, the CCBC's annual best-of-the-year list, I see extraordinary titles from Australian authors whose books we've come to greatly anticipate, such as Markus Zusak (I Am the Messenger, The Book Thief), Sonya Harnett (Stripes of the Sidestep Wolf, Surrender, The Silver Donkey), Judith Clarke
(Kalpana's Dream, One Whole and Perfect Day). I also see welcome new voices on the U.S. publishing scene, such as Jaclyn Moriarity (The Year of Secret Assignments, The Murder of Bindy MacKenzie), Justine Larbalestier (the "Magic or Madness" trilogy), and master short story writer Margo Lanagan (Black Juice, White Time, Red Stripes).
We'd like to hear your thoughts on recent Australian literature for children and teens.
