BOOK FEST 2007
Once again, Book Fest 2007 will bring people together to share the joys of
reading and talking about books for children and teens.
The Office of Children?s Services and The Office of Young Adult Services of The
New York Public Library are pleased to continue this special event. To kick the
morning off, Lois Lowry, recipient of the 2007 Margaret A. Edwards Award honoring
her outstanding lifetime contribution to writing for teens and winner of Newbery
Medals for The Giver and Number the Stars, will be our keynote speaker. Lois
Lowry is the author of many books for children and teens. Her most recent titles
are Gossamer , an ALA Notable Children?s Book, and Gooney the Fabulous . Lois
Lowry is also a contributor to a new collection of short stories entitled Shining
on: 11 Star Authors? Illuminating Stories .
Next it will be time for you to discuss books in our small book discussion
groups. Choose one of the eleven groups listed by age to the right. Each is led
by a well-known children?s or young adult literature specialist in the New York
City area. Make a selection and read all the books listed so you can share in the
discussion.
Our afternoon panel will feature an exciting array of talented authors and
illustrators dedicated to using technology to create art in children?s books.
William Low has won numerous awards including four Silver medals from the Society
of Illustrators. His books include Chinatown (author/illustrator), The Days of
Summer by Eve Bunting and Henry and the Kite Dragon by Bruce Edward Hall, and Old
Penn Station (author/illustrator).
J. Otto Seibold, author/illustrator of Olive the Other Reindeer, was one of the
first children's book artists to create computer-generated art and is considered
the master of that medium. His most recent book is Mind Your Manners, B. B. Wolf,
written by Judy Sierra.
John Grandits is an award-winning book and magazine designer and the author of
"Beatrice Black Bear," a monthly cartoon for Click magazine. Technically It's Not
My Fault, his first book of concrete poems, is and ALA Notable Book. Blue
Lipstick is his most recent book of concrete poetry.
To keep your energy flowing, there will be morning coffee, a gourmet lunch, and a
sherry hour at the day?s conclusion. Book sales and autographing by our featured
presenters will add to the day?s enjoyment.
The registration deadline is October 1, 2007.
WE HOPE THAT YOU WILL JOIN US IN THE BEAUTIFUL CELESTE BARTOS FORUM ON SATURDAY,
OCTOBER 13, FOR A STIMULATING BOOK FEST 2007.
