Whereas, I like to think that the Hat talked to him. My favorite part of that whole scene is something really minor and it's that Neville breaks free of the curse "with a swift, fluid motion." That demonstrated to me that Neville has really grown up. He's spent the previous 6 books being brave, but also being a total klutz at the same time. I like to think that at this point, he's grown both into his body and into his confidence.

No, I totally didn't get that either. But perhaps Dumbledore deliberately didn't make his spells last longer--he would want Harry to be able to escape at that point, whereas Mad-Eye, always suspicious and pessimistic, wanted to ensure those curses lasted after his death.
