[CCBC-Net] Neville and the sword

I've been back and re-read the last part and I still don't see how Neville was able to pull the Sword of Gryffindor out of the hat. The last we see of it, Griphook the goblin has it (and JK made it very clear that once he had it, he would not give it up again). How did the sword get into the hat? I've looked on other HP discussion sites and the only answer people have suggested is that the Sorting Hat produces the sword for a Gryffindor person in time of need and heroism. That didn't work for me.
