My favorite is "North To Fredom" by Anne Holm. It has been republished in the U.S. as "I Am David". There is also a movie based on the book that I have not seen, although my fifth graders gave it a good review. This is a remarkable book about a boy who grows up in a concentration camp in eastern Europe. One day a guard inexplicably arranges for the boy to escape, gives him a few scraps of bread and some water, and tells the boy to head north until he gets to Denmark. David is wise and intelligent, but he has no experience of the outside world, so his freedom is a tremendous, albeit welcome, burden to him. I can't say enough good things about this book, and it has been well loved by every adult or child to whom I've shown it. The guard's motives become clear in the end, as does the reason that David must walk north to freedom. Treat yourself!
