The Island on Bird Street by Uri Orlev is a gripping survival story set in a Polish ghetto during WW2. How many children could imagine what it would be like to survive in bombed out XXXX (insert your city) ? Slake's Limbo I a story of "subway survival' that is also gripping. These books really appeal to boys ( and girls lap them up, too.) I am particularly fond of the genre... to wit... I just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy.
