I'm working on an article featuring outdoor survival read-alouds for Book Links magazine later this fall. I'm focusing on recently published books that were not written by Gary Paulsen (I'm a huge Paulsen fan, but his name is already familiar to many librarians in connection to survival stories). My favorites so far are the already mentioned Alabama Moon, The Trap by John Smelcer (beautifully written), and Overboard by Elizabeth Fama. They will both appeal to both girls and boys - the latter features a girl who is on a ferry that sinks. She has to survive the night in the middle of the ocean. Another good read-aloud outdoor survival book featuring female protagonists is Danger Mountain by Sherry Shahan.
