Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen was always the book that I used to "hook" reluctant 6th grade readers. I would read the story aloud up to the point where the pilot had a heart attack, then stop right at that cliff-hanger and hand out the books to then very eager recipients. Young middle-schoolers are really learning to "survive" and were interested in all kinds of survival stories once they were hooked. We read George's My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves and Watkins, So Far From the Bamboo Grove; survival in all kinds of circumstances and in different times fueled a love of reading for my grade sixers. Although it was many years ago that I used these books ( in the 80's and 90's) my grandchildren still read and enjoy them.
