I too enjoyed Alabama Moon...I thought it was Newbery material. I find it interesting that so many good books are being published about Vietnam vets--finally, after so many years.

Another story that is equally riveting is The Mailbox by Audrey Shafer, about a 6th grade boy who tries to keep his uncle's (also his legal guardian) death a secret from everyone.

Megan mentioned Shug--I absolutely loved that book. My 7th grade daughter and her friends passed that one around--they could all relate to that story.

A survival story from last year that I liked tremendously was Watt Key's Alabama Moon. It is a completely riveting read and I think would complement Gary Paulsen's classic, Hatchet, beautifully. The fourth grade boys I gave it to liked it tremendously too.
