Hi--
I wonder if I could ask some help from everybody. Mostly a lurker here, in my other life I am a nonfiction author for kids and am writing a book on elections that will be published by Bloomsbury this spring. Hopefully funny and informative, it looks at the electoral process and the need for participation--using historic examples as well as contemporary ones. It focuses on presidental elections--no surprise for a 2008 book.
I'm now compiling a list of suggested reading for kids at the back. Nonfiction--no problem. But I always like to include works of fiction in my reading lists, knowing that people learn about a subject in different ways. I've been able to find novels about kids running for student council as well as Dan Gutman's This Kid who Ran for President and Mom for Mayor by Nancy Edwards.
I'm having a much harder time, however, finding titles of historical fiction that include a presidential election (or politics) in its plot. Another option--books that focus on a president or present him in the background sufficiently for the reader to get a sense of the political issues he had to face during his administration. All I've come up with is Nelly Curtis' Diary by Miriam Anne Bourne and Ann Rinaldi's An Unlikely Friendship: A Novel of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Keckley.
I'm pretty much looking for novels for grades 4-6, although ones that skew a little bit older or younger might work.
I really appreciate the help--and can't think of a better place to ask for it. Just want to remind you, though, to answer me directly so we don't bother everybody else.
Thanks again--Susan Goodman
