A recent YA book with an adventurous trip to Antarctica at its heart is Geraldine McCaughrean's White Darkness. Sym, a girl in love with the ghost of Titus Oates of the doomed Scott expedition, is whisked to the Ice by her crazy "uncle," Victor. Sym's voice is astounding - you're never sure whether she's crazy or just brilliant in an offbeat way. As she travels in Scott's and Oates' footsteps her resilience is tested over and over as she learns more and more about Victor's plans for her. It's a tour de force (and on a hot day it's kind of delightful to read about the cold!) -
