It seems that no matter what the topic is, a Betsy-Tacy book is recommended reading. Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy and the Great World is a wonderful depiction of early 20th century steamship travel. We see the "schlep" of traveling as Betsy, or rather the porter, lugs her steamship trunk up the gangplank. Inside, carefully packed, are outfits for dining, sightseeing, etc. Betsy meets a variety of people on her European tour and experiences what it is like to be an American overseas. After several ports of call, the perfect romantic ending awaits. Thank goodness for personal ads.
