An interesting view of travel in an earlier time is Peter and Connie Roop's Good-Bye for Today: The Diary of a Young Girl at Sea. This story of a young girl in 1871 is based on a couple of actual accounts of daughters of New England whalers of traveling on the whaling ships that took their occupants on a huge journal from New England around the tip of South America and into the Pacific and the Bering Sea. The story is very simply told, but gives a good idea of the immensity of the oceans traveled and the distance from home.
