UNDER THE PERSIMMON TREE by Suzanne Fisher Staples is set in Afghanistan and Pakistan post Sept. 11. After seeing her mother and baby brother bombed, one of the two female protagonists undertakes a journey from her home in Afghanistan to Pakistan to find her father and brother who have been conscripted by the Taliban. A major portion of the story is Najmah's extremely perilous journey.
