And if we're talking about traveling around Australia, we must come to Mem Fox's Possum Magic.

Three picture books come to mind:

Are We There Yet? A Journey Around Australia by Alison Lester is a fun one. It features a young girl and her family as they travel around Australia. It showcases the geographical diversity of the continent in a great way-from urban Sydney to more rural areas. There's a lot of information and text (although presented in a casual way), and it would be appealing up to 2nd grade, I'm sure.

An old favorite is Cynthia Rylant's The Relatives Came. It's not told from the perspective of a traveler, but rather from someone expecting company. It's a great story of family life in the country-everyone kissing, a full house, etc. I love it.

This may be stretching it, but I'll throw it in anyway-Sam Swope's Gotta Go! Gotta Go! The hero of the story is a little caterpillar. He has an urge in his heart to keep truckin' on to Mexico, but he has no idea why. It's a fun read aloud as well (the only probblem is is that it's on the small-ish size, so may not be best for a large group.).
