"I took a look at the new titles being advertised in the children's section of the HC website in response to Julie's posting. While her statement may not have been entirely accurate, there is a strikingly long list of movie tie-ins, and a rather thin list of the kind of titles that we have historically come to expect from this publisher. I couldn't identify many celebrity titles, but that may have been due to my own ignorance of celebrities in general."

As far as the above is concerned.....

That is the current season's list...HC publishes three lists a year...what about the other two lists.....what about the books they published last year, or the year before, or what they will publish next year. A publisher's list is not the same from one season to the next..and, too, certain books are be published in the fall if the publisher believes strong holiday sales are possible. Movie tie-ins....are, of course, tied into the release of the movie. Not to be forgotten...when movie rights to a book are sold, the studio ( or buyer) retains what is called...merchandising rights which is exactly what it says...tie ins of any kind, and to be determined by the holder of the rights. In most cases, the writer of the book, as well as the publisher has little, if any control, and approval over the form/content. Without merchandising rights, no one will acquire movie rights. Try telling a writer not to have his or her novel made into a movie...good luck to anyone who tries. Also, in a related issue, when a writer dies, the executor of the estate dictates how the property will be handled in the future. Some estates become very aggressive in demanding spin-offs or whatever and if the original publisher will not go along, the estate will make arrangements elsewhere. Never mind that the demands may violate the author's position on this or that when he/she was living....unless the will is iron clad on this issue, many estates do what they please in the interest of generating more revenue from the property. A case of...X may be dead but he/she still working. Norma Jean
