Though I haven't read his book (and don't plan to) I was pleased to hear Jason Alexander(George on "Seinfeld") give honest responses about his literary accomplishment ("Dad Are You the Tooth Fairy?") in a radio interview a while back. He said he had made up a tooth fairy story to tell his kids (or someone's kids) and someone said he should publish it. So he did. (Kate DiCamillo received 500 rejection slips in 6 years). He was asked how long it took him to write, and answered with a proud laugh, "Twenty minutes!" (Mem Fox says it takes her "two years to write 500 words for children"). And how much his advance was: "Hardly anything, maybe $10,000." (while amazing authors like Vicki Cobb and Deborah Hopkinson have to add a full schedule of school visits and/or other jobs). There are probably celebrities who put a bit more effort into it all, but I wouldn't be surprised if Alexander's experience is pretty typical...
