One picture book I really liked that spoke of a merging of Asian/Japanese and American cultures was:

How my parents learned to eat by Ina R. Friedman and Allan Say (ill.)

The 'narrator' is a child with a Japanese mother and American father. Her parents met while he was in the navy, and she lived at home in Japan. He wants to ask her out to dinner, but doesn't know how to eat Japanese style, and is afraid of embarrasing himself. She feels the same about eating American-style. How they resolve this is wonderful, and funny.
