Carolyn Marsden has a growing body of award-winning middle grade novels that feature immigrant protagonists. The Gold-Threaded Dress and its sequel The Quail Club (Candlewick) tell the story of Oy, a Thai-American girl who feels the push and pull of two cultures and solves two difficult situations in satisfying ways. Mama Had to Work on Christmas (Viking) describes the social and economic chasms that exist on the San Diego-Tijuana border. Marsden's latest book, Jade Dragon (Candlewick,) presents another compelling cross-cultural story through the friendship of a U.S. born girl with Chinese parents and a Chinese-born girl adopted by white Americans.
