I really enjoyed "The Year of the Dog" too. The author did a fine job of seeing the world from a young child's perspective. She made the ordinary seem funny, serious and at times, absurd. I also liked Lin's wise presentation of a novel with universal truths--that of a little girl discovering her own identity through friendship, family and culture but finding out that these too can be a mixed bag altogether.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "The Year of the Dog" by Grace Lin. I just finished this book and was delighted by it. I am full of admiration for the author who can write a book that is simple enough to be read by younger readers (I would say 3rd-4th grades), and still full of authenticity, humor and significance.
Best, Dawn Boarman
