I'm so glad someone mentioned this book. I just finished reading it to 3rd graders who absolutely loved it. We even had a "Grace Lin party" when we finished -- did a few things she mentioned in the book. Unfortunately it's the wrong time of year for buying the "ugly vegetables" so that we could make the soup but we did combine our reading it with all of her picture books which bear a strong resemblance to the family in "The Year of the Dog". So it's very obvious even to the kids that she's the character in the book and she did grow up to be an author and illustrator. We also looked at her website and blog and got to see pictures of her. We're anxiously awaiting the sequel, The Year of the Rat.
