Hi--Am hoping you won't mind my plugging my own new book . . . I'm the author of a number of children's books, one of which was just mentioned in the discussion--NOTHING EVER HAPPENS ON 90TH STREET in which neighbors venture their advice to a child writer who thinks she has no ideas, then writes an account of the extraordinary things that happen on 90th Street and, after accepting neighbors' compliments on her story, thanks them and says her story will be even better, "after I rewrite it."
My new book, THE BOY WHO LOVED WORDS (Schwartz & Wade Books/Random House, 2006),complements 90TH STREET in that it is about a boy who collects words he loves the sound of, then sets out to find his purpose, which he discovers is "spreading the word" to people in search of the right word. There is, for example, in the story, a poet who is searching for the perfect words to describe the moon. Selig, a.k.a. "Wordsworth" helps him find them. It has been my honor to hear that teachers are using the idea of a "word tree," described in the book, to encourage child writers to savor and collect THEIR favorite words and use them in their writing. Random House has been kind enough to provide a Teacher's Guide that is downloadable from their site and has suggestions for how to use the book in the classroom.
Someone recently told me about your site and it has been my pleasure over the past few days to hear the enthusiasm of so many educators for so many books! Roni Schotter
