In Mary Amato's Naked Mole-Rat Letters, the main character communicates most honestly in writing. That idea, that it's easier to be honest in writing, but harder to say exactly what you feel in person, should resonate with elementary students. It seems to me that we have an abundance of books written as diaries, particularly historical fiction books, but even some fairy tales are being written as a character's diary. These are for elementary students, but I don't think they actually pay any attention to the fact that they are written as diaries. They are well-aware that the author wrote them, and don't notice this popular format anymore. Gail Dent White Elementary School Librarian Tucson, Arizona
