I found Copper Sun to be an extraordinary book and a fine choice for the Coretta Scott King Award. The horrors of Amari's capture, transport and sale are vividly portrayed.Young readers can see the suffocating persecution of the Derby plantation through the different perspectives of Amari and Polly and witness the development of their complicated relationship. The unspeakable events which precipitate their escape are impossible to forget. Draper has not only created characters about whom one cares deeply, she has offered them a hopeful future in the Fort Mose, Florida, community, which has not, to my knowledge, been explored in literature for young people.
It is unfortunate, I think, that a member of the list responded to comments about the book before reading it. When members who have not read it do read it, they will see that this is not only an excellent choice in comparison with other work published in 2006, but a fine work by any standard. I applaud the CSK Jury for honoring Sharon Draper and her affecting exploration of slavery's horrors and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Rita Auerbach
