The Batchelder Award winners always seem to allude me until they are announced. I cannot comment on the books themselves, but I wonder why we are so poor at obtaining literature from other countries.
It has gotten a little better because of this award. Of course, England has always been looked to for children's literature in the history of the United States so Harry Potter was not so surprising and has really helped, especially with the founding of Arthur Levine imprint with Scholastic. Now we can thank Arthur for Cornelia Funk and others.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for someone seeking newly translated titles?
