[CCBC-Net] Sibert

I think that in it's first five years the Sibert was awarded to some books that easily extend into the high school range. The first two that jump to mind are Jack Gantos' Printz Honor book Hole in My Life and Judd Winick's graphic novel, Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss, and What I Learned. If you haven't read these titles, Gantos' vivid and brutally honest memoir tells of his late teenage years when he smuggled drugs, got busted and went to prison. Winick's frank graphic novel focuses' on the dynamic Pedro Zamora; Winick's castmate from the MTV reality show, Real World, who was an AIDS activist and died from complications of the virus. In addition, Marc Aronson's scholarly, analytical study of Sir Walter Ralegh and the Quest for El Dorado and Joan Dash's erudite and intricately detailed examination of the quest to solve the problem of navigating the high seas in The Longitude Prize make these titles very suitable for readers at the secondary level.
