The Children's/Young Adult Book Committee of PEN American Center has begun a discussion of censorship in its many forms (including self-censorship) on the PEN Web site. We've introduced the topic with three essays by Robert Lipsyte, Mary Ann Hoberman, and Elizabeth Levy.
We invite you to read the essays and respond to them in the comments section of the web page. Here is the link:

CCF is having an online writing contest!

How about submitting a 200 word story? Or asking your students to submit one? The contest is open to writers of all ages. http://www.childrencomefirst.com/onlinewriter.shtml

If you're game, then it's time to turn in the March online writing entry! Here are the rules:

--The story must start with the line, "What?!?! There's actually a National Save A Spider Day?" This has to be its "first line."
--It needs to be under 200 words in length.

Pretty simple, huh?

Contestants can write it up and then cut and paste it onto the form on this page, http://www.childrencomefirst.com/onlinewriter.shtml

All fields need to be filled out, especially the byline where you may put a link to your website and/or blog if you have one...or address to your business, etc., whatever you want folks to know about you goes there. Students' last names will not be posted to the CCF site. We'll only post their first name, school they attend, and the lines they send in describing themselves.

After the form is completed, click the "SUBMIT" button and you're done!
