I thought "American Born Chinese" was ... perfect! It could not have been anything other than a graphic novel. That story would not have been successful as a "regular" novel. I found it funny (I laughed out loud), with good character development, and the ending was delightful-- I didn't see it coming; it was quite clever the way the stories came together. The book dealt with stereotypes, with self-stereotyping, themes of friendship and growing up different in a world of sameness, and still was able to pull in mythology and show us how ancient stories are like our modern lives. Bravo to the committee for recognizing excellence in this format and for putting the book into the public view.

sun coming up every day is a story. Everything's got a story in it.
Change the story, change the world. "
