[CCBC-Net] [child_lit] children's reactions to THE WORD

Now I imagined that when I read it allowed to my class that some minor giggled might occurred. However.... I just had my morning meeting with my 4th graders. I told them that something in the book had caused quite a stir. A couple of the kids already knew, but the rest did not. I said it was in the first couple of pages and I'd read it to them to see if they figured out what it was. So I did. When I came to the dreaded word there was nothing...not a giggle... not a puzzled look...nothing except they clearly were curious and wanted me to read on. So I did to the bottom of page 3 when I had to stop because it was time for math. I've promised to finish reading Short Sammy's story later today.

I then asked them what they thought was causing such a stir. Several said it was the drinking and then one said it was about where the dog got bitten. And then the two kids who already knew and I said, yes it was. They were bemused and said, like me, that it was no big deal. After all we see those parts of dogs all the time, they said.

So not even giggles....
