One key to the flap over this year's Newbery winner is in that Times article, where the NJ librarian defines the audience for the Newbery as 8-9 year olds. Many of the posts here have talked about the problem of reading the book outloud. But the Newbery, like the Sibert, Caldecott, Batchelder, is an ALSC award -- it is for readers up to and including age 14. Committees are not asked to pick a book that most ALSC-age kids can read, they are not asked to aim for a mean or median age. Few 14-year olds are likely to be avid readers of Frog and Toad, few 8 year olds of The View from Saturday. The fact that a book selected by an ALSC committee strikes some concerned adults as not suitable for younger readers has nothing to do with whether that book is a good choice. 14-year-olds have as much claim to the attention of judges as 9 year olds.
