Many children are aware of 12 step programs, through a parent or older sibling's participation, and in a small town with not much else to do, it adds to the humor that there are enough of them to provide Lucky with a job cleaning up after them and pondering the possibility of a Higher Power to solve her worries.

The first chapter was a very humorous hook to a book I was not expecting to like from reading the cover flap -- and by the time I was done reading it, it was my personal Newbery choice.

If we are denying children exposure to a wonderful book based on the use of one anatomically correct word, I think we are doing them a great disservice. Let's have the guts to stand up for good books; our colleagues have done it over the years, and we can continue to do it now.
