The first chapter worked for me as a microcosm of Lucky's understanding of the world around her. The things she was hearing about while eavesdropping on the AA meeting were unfamiliar to her, much as her future was uncertain and unknown. There are concepts, ideas, and words in the world that young people haven't even wondered about yet, and it's likely that many young readers of the novel will have the same kinds of questions that Lucky has. In the end, Lucky did find out what the definition of scrotum is, and it turned out to be no big deal. But Lucky learned so much more, and I thought it was clever of Patron to create the full circle of that irrelevant, unfamiliar concept becoming clear, and to place that alongside all of the other, more important things Lucky finds out. For me, it accurately portrays the way a child's mind makes sense of her world.
