I think the opening scene and chapter tell us about Lucky and her community. (And isn't a dog being bitten on the "scrotum" just the kind of detail a kid like Lucky would latch onto? It tells us a bit about her, and a bit about Sammy who is telling that story.) We meet Lucky and learn she is an eavesdropper and an observer. She likes to gather details. But she doesn't always put them together correctly--another wholly authentic part of being a kid. So there is an irony that plays out because she is very observant, and yet she is so focused on the details that she sometimes fails to notice the big truth, such as how much Brigit (sp?) loves her.
