[CCBC-Net] FLOTSAM

After having the honor and pleasure of serving on the Newbery, Caldecott, and first Seuss award committees, I will never second guess what ANY committee selects. Not only does each committee look at only the books for that year and compare only those, but there is an immense amount of discussion and compromise. They focus the discussion around the criteria for each individual award -- not just their personal feelings about the books. I know that I learned much from my other committee members and came to appreciate books in new ways after the discussions.

I agree with Lee that both MOSES and LITTLE RED HEN are truly distinguished
-- as were many other books -- but none of us are privy to the discussions that the committee went through. I have never found a committee where the members don't take their work seriously; they all want to find the "perfect" book that meets all the criteria. Some years that is more difficult than other years. And it is truly a rarity that any of the award committees select a book that EVERYONE in the library, publishing, book, and education communities cherish and embrace. We all look at things differently -- and that is the beauty of these discussions. We need to appreciate all opinions but respect what the committees have accomplished.

There is nothing wrong with FLOTSAM winning the Caldecott Award or Weisner winning the medal for the third time -- but -- this was a year when the Caldecott committee could have made a great impact in the history of children's literature by awarding the medal to the first African American artist.
Certainly, MOSES by Nelson, or THE LITTLE RED HEN by Pinkney are equally distinguished.
