Although I too would have loved to see Jerry Pinkney's Little Red Hen honored and Moses is an extraordinary work, either book's winning would not have resulted in the first African-American artist receiving the Caldecott. Leo Dillon received that honor with Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears and then broke another barrier with back-to-back Caldecotts the next year with Ashanti to Zulu. Penny
